When You Gotta Go -Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee Discuss Options for Treating Post-Prostatectomy Urinary Incontinence
Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee discuss a topic that resonates with many men who have undergone a prostatectomy, or surgical removal of the prostate gland. Urinary incontinence is often referred to as leakage and can occur for a number of reasons including lifting, sneezing, and coughing. Due to the location of the prostate, treatments to this area can sometimes have an impact on a man's ability to hold and empty urine.
Dr. Mistry shares that immediately after a prostate removal, everyone will experience some form of incontinence. Fortunately, this is typically short-lived and can start to resolve within 2-3 weeks. Many men will find their ability to either "go" or "hold-it" restored within a few months of this procedure.
A smaller percentage of men, about 4-7%, will not recover this ability as quickly and will have a highly bothersome incontinence. Dr. Mistry discusses several treatment options for ongoing urinary incontinence, including sling placement and an implantable silicone device, two procedures that can provide resistance to the urethra and help stop leakage for good.
At Urology Specialists, finding the right prostate cancer treatment is equally as important as quality of life after treatment. That's why patients find themselves with access to a pelvic floor physical therapist, nutritionist, sex therapist, and more. We've got you covered!
