The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching
Education:How To
Season 1 Episode 33: "How do we receive Professional Development"
In Episode 33 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on how we as teachers differ so greatly in our abilities to receive professional development. We are all on different paths with learning for our profession, and oftentimes, the perception is that if there is not active engagement by teachers in a particular professional learning situation, the assumption is made that learning has not necessarily occurred. It's important as teachers to recognize that learning for educators looks different from so many different angles. The development of relationships is important, the use of exit tickets needs to be re-assessed, and engagement needs to be measured in many ways.
Chey and Pav talk about processing time, the need to step away from learning and be able to absorb the takeaways from a PD session in order to apply learning appropriately. They discuss being a Guide on the Side as opposed to being a Sage on Stage, and the different it makes to assist teachers with the learning they want to do on their own terms. Pav discusses the different ways that she likes to deliver PD to her staff, and how it echoes the way that she likes to learn. Chey talks about how important it is for PD leaders to not mistake quiet during a session for lack of engagement or learning. Teachers all learn in very different ways, and we have to be able to accommodate for all of them!
Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Hedreich Nichols, Middle School Technology teacher from Arlington, Texas, who talks about equity and race and discussing all the difficult "heartwork" that goes into creating inclusive practice.
Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies.
