Shanna Missett Nelson - Jazzercise for the Next Generation
When asked to name the most well known fitness brands, the average person would probably mention Jazzercise. Started in 1969 by a dance instructor who realized that many people in her class just wanted to move, not necessarily become professional dancers, Judi Sheppard Missett created THE FIRST dance exercise program to be re-produced and taught throughout the world. What started in a small dance studio in Chicago and migrated to the fitness capital of Southern California Jazzercise is still going strong and has evolved with the times to offer a variety of programming in addition to a robust library available through an on-demand app.
Shanna Missett Nelson is the daughter of the founder of Jazzercise and is the president of the organization helping to oversee its growth in the 21st century. In a special Mother's Day 2020 tribute, Shanna joins All About Fitness to talk about how Jazzercise created the categories of 'fitness mompreneur' and boutique studio (it did), what it was like growing up as the daughter of a fitness icon, how the organization has changed with the times and why she didn't tell her mother when she auditioned to become a Jazzercise instructor. This is a fun and vibrant conversation about the growth and evolution of one of the most iconic brands to ever make you sweat.
