I recently saw some new legislation called the Trillion Trees Act. The intention behind the Act is a worldwide effort to plant an additional trillion trees. And, President Trump said the US will join this initiative. The bill was introduced in February 2020 by Representative Bruce Westerman, a pro-logging advocate from Arkansas, along with several Republican colleagues. He challenged everyone to find a better climate solution than taking care of our forests. Republican Representative Steve Stivers of Ohio hailed the act as offering a powerful solution to combat our changing climate.
This initiative claims that a trillion trees is an important part of solving the global climate crisis, and I really like that comment because in and of itself, it is an acknowledgement by republicans that there is a problem and we need to stop global warming. The second statement is that trees will help slow down man-made climate change. Further, those two statements combined acknowledge that the global climate is a human created problem.
Given you can’t solve a problem until you acknowledge that it truly exists, the statements behind this Act are positive and the Act is based on a great concept. After all, who doesn’t love trees and who would come out against planting trees? But the question that exists is, will it work?
To get more perspective on the economics and practicality of planting a trillion trees as a solution to stop global warming, please listen to this week’s Energy Show.
