The Chey and Pav Show: Teachers Talking Teaching
Education:How To
Season 1 Episode 38: Reflecting on Anti-Racism
In Episode 38 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the events of the past week, starting with the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and how it really changed the course of conversations in many spheres, including within education. Chey and Pav touch on many subtopics, starting with the discussion about Voice; specifically their own voice. Chey and Pav recognize that they have the privilege of a platform, and they intend to use it in every way they possibly can. They also talk about being able to amplify the voices of others, namely the marginalized individuals around us. Chey and Pav then move on to talk about what anti-racist conversation looks like in the classroom. They discuss the hesitancy that they experienced this past week from their own students, and possibly why they may have experienced this. They also discuss the challenge of not being in front of their students at this time, and having discussions with their students sitting with them in the room.
Chey and Pav talk about the pace at which they can engage with their students, and even with others with respect to the conversations that need to be had. They talk about what it looks like to have the difficult conversations, and then have to move on to the action portion. They need to be able to move past the difficult stages of anger and discomfort and then move on the action part of change. They wrap up by talking about the long work that lies ahead of them. There is a lot that needs to be done. If society is failing, then somewhere along the way, education is failing. There is much work to be done.
Chey and Pav wrap up by giving a few takeaways from the episode. They highlight the 5 main areas that were discussed and highlight that the difficult conversations are the first step, and then the action in the classrooms must begin.
Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies.
