Girrrl... Can I Ask You Something?
Society & Culture:Relationships
In linguistics, code switching is the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation. However, for African-American's (and other minority populations) code switching is more of a survival technique. Rather than switching languages, its more like a switch of personas. Let me explain, the words we choose, the content we select, as well as the intonation, articulation, and sometimes the pitch, tone, and resonance of our voices are modulated to match the environment rather than to reflect our true selves. Ok, that may be too extreme, but I'm not far from the truth. See for yourselves as Rhumel and Twanda discuss how code switching has impacted their lives.
