Do you often find yourself looking at others in your industry and wondering why you are not on their same level? Listen in to today's podcast as Jay details why it is vital that you stop comparing your starting point to other peoples’ endpoint. Learn that the key to success is consistency, how journaling your daily achievements can allow you to look at your steady progression and how all the small wins will eventually add up to your big win.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When you see somebody that has achieved a large amount of success, you are seeing the end result. What you haven’t seen is the time it has taken and the challenges in between. We have a habit of comparing ourselves to others and wanting to get to their position instantly. You need to create a long term plan with an end goal.
In the age of social media, whereby everybody is posting the highlights of their lives, you have to take everything with a pinch of salt. Take the inspiration from other peoples’ posts, and then make that applicable to yourself. Ensure you are consistent with your daily ‘one step forward’ jobs and have it in your mind that there is no overnight success.
The biggest thing that happens is procrastination. You start something new and you don’t see it going somewhere straight away, and then you give up. If you want to get somewhere, you have to take it step by step.
Sometimes the best results come from when you least expect them. You may be trying and trying to make sales, or create contacts and you may not feel like you are getting anywhere. Follow up is the key, as this is where you close the deals. Do not give up after your first attempt.
Each day, write down in a journal what you have achieved during that day. These may be big or small achievements, you will automatically start feeling better as you will soon realise that in just one day, you achieved a lot. If you don’t write this down, you may feel like you are not progressing or moving forward.
If you sit down and be honest with yourself about why you have not achieved something, you will most likely find it is because you started, and then you stopped. The momentum stopped because you thought you weren’t getting far enough. You will then look back and see that if you had continued with your consistent daily goals, then you would have been much further ahead.
BEST MOMENTS
“We have a habit of looking at other people and wanting to get there overnight.”
“Don’t look at someone’s end journey and compare it with your start journey.”
“Take time to make sure you do your daily activities, day in day out.”

ABOUT THE HOST
Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0 to 500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all with no investment other than a slight amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota, and New Look, to name a few.
Its immense success inevitably brought about outside interest, and at the age of 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success.
A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.
After helping several young entrepreneurs to succeed as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.
Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.
In the UK alone 95% of businesses fail within the first five years and Jay aims to reduce that number.
Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.
