Last month we looked at the ancient philosopher Epicurus. When we put on his ancient spectacles we understand much of the modern world. We live in an Epicurean world. But what could ever topple this pleasure-seeking world view? Stoicism has been, traditionally, the competitor to Epicureanism. It's all about accepting the moment and living for virtue (rather than pure pleasure). But the gospel of Jesus is different to both of these philosophies.
