Read by: Anthony Rajski
By this point in John’s gospel, it seems that for many the way Jesus is inaugurating God’s kingdom could be a fulfillment of long-awaited hope. For others they see him as a serious threat to national security. Jesus has confounded the expectations of just about everyone he’s encountered with healings, teachings, and miraculous signs, and now he has raised his friend Lazarus from the dead.
----------REFLECT----------
1. What word or phrase stood out to you in the passage?
2. In this passage Jesus’ understanding of his vocation and the desires of the Jewish leaders are actually beginning to intersect. Have you seen God at work in your life even during seasons or experiences that were unjust or painful? What did that look like?
3. It often feels like the political sphere is the most powerful and primary--and that in order to have control we must figure out how to leverage power in that realm. How does Jesus’ interaction with the political world challenge you? How does it shape your view of power?
