Microbiologist Dr. Marie-Claire Arrieta was born in and grew up in Costa Rica. She currently lives in Calgary, Canada with her husband Esteban and their two children Marisol and Emiliano.
Claire originally trained as a medical microbiologist. She became very interested in the concept of the gut as the engine of diseases that occur in organs far away from the gut.
Claire completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Brett Finlay, who has pioneered many studies in the field of the human microbiome.
Together they wrote the book, “Let Them Eat Dirt: Saving Your Child from an Oversanitized World”.
Currently Claire is an Assistant Professor in the departments of Physiology, Pharmacology and Paediatrics at the University of Calgary and a Child Health and Wellness Researcher.
