9/14: Communities recovering from Hurricane Laura prepare for another storm. Wildfires kill dozens and bring air quality concerns to the West.
Millions of Americans are facing two growing threats from mother nature this morning. In the Gulf, Tropical Storm Sally is gaining strength as it barrels toward landfall tomorrow. It's expected to become a Category One hurricane and is threatening some of the same communities still recovering from Hurricane Laura. Raging wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington state are burning out of control, where at least 35 people have died. Smoke is creating dangerously bad air quality, including the worst air quality in the world in Portland, Oregon, according to one major index. A manhunt is underway for a gunman who ambushed two sheriff's deputies near Los Angeles. The deputies were shot in their parked patrol car Saturday night and are recovering in a local hospital. President Trump spoke during a day of campaigning in Nevada, including an indoor rally last night that was condemned as unsafe by the state's Democratic governor. The number of new coronavirus cases in America is dropping, but experts warn the decline may not last. In the last two weeks, the average number of daily reported cases is down by about 18%, but this fall and winter are expected to bring new dangers.
