The Tragedy of Almighty Voice

Patrice Dutil discusses the short life of Kitchimanitowaya, or Almighty Voice (1875-1897), with Bill Waiser the author of In Search of Almighty Voice: Resistance and Reconciliation (Fifth House Press). Almighty Voice was accused of poaching a settler’s cow and became the object of an RCMP manhunt in the mid-1890s. His story, however, was distorted all through the 20th century in books, magazines, and film. Bill Waiser discusses how history can help reconciliation between indigenous peoples and Canadians and what distinguishes “popular history” from scholarly work.
