Inappropriate Happiness w/ Karina Rykman & Isaac Slone
Music:Music Commentary
We’ve had a lot of new podcasts come out recently. Today I want to tell you about one of those, and tell you about a few other things happening in the music world.
Genesis and Phish Connections on Beyond the Pond. This week Brian and Dave released part 1 of their exploration of the connections between Genesis and Phish. They’re joined by HF Pod co-host and Osiris production wizard Matt Dwyer and Tom Marshall to discuss the history of Genesis and their lasting impact on the origins of Phish across two episodes. In Part I, they start to outline the connection between Genesis and Phish, with lots of music from both bands.
Trey and The Roots on Jimmy Fallon. If you missed this, you must check it out. Last night, Trey played “I Never Needed You Like This Before” on The Tonight Show, and he was the first musician to perform in-studio since the pandemic began. The energy was clear in that room, and Jimmy Fallon said as much at the end, about how much he missed live music.
Marcus King Series Raises $80K for MusiCares. From JamBase, Marcus King announced that his livestream series, Four Of A Kind, and accompanying auction raised $80,000 for MusiCares. King worked with Spotify’s COVID-19 Music Relief project for the charity event and Spotify matched proceeds donated through the fund. The series took place between July 13 and August 3, and featured tons of guests. Really cool that Marcus was able to raise that much for a good cause.
New Single from Old 97s. From JamBase, the Old 97’s shared “Bottle Rocket Baby,” the latest single off their upcoming album, Twelfth. ATO Records will release the group’s appropriately titled 12th album on August 21. They worked with Vance Powell on this. For a deep conversation with him, check out Under the Scales. And if you’re an Old 97s fan, please check out my conversation with Rhett Miller on Past, Present, Future, Live!
