Episode 10: Life from the back, with Jessica Littlewood
The NDP swept to a majority government in 2015, knocking down the 44-year-old PC dynasty in the process. Jessica Littlewood, who was elected as the MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville, was one of many political neophytes who won in 2015 and lost in 2019. Although a private member, the one-term MLA successfully pushed for corrections officers to be included under presumptive PTSD coverage and chaired two committees. She remains involved with the party as co-chair of the NDP rural caucus with fellow former MLA Shaye Anderson.
In this wide-ranging discussion, we spoke to Jessica about her upbringing as a Jehovah's Witness and how that informed her politics before talking about what it's like to be a private member in a first-time majority government, her accomplishments, regrets, Bill 32 and how the NDP has been handling its time in opposition against a UCP government hell-bent on dismantling the public sector.
