Therapists Are People Too (T.A.P.T.)
Health & Fitness:Mental Health
Season 1 Ep 2 Paid My Dues As A Home Visitor: Burn Out & Shifting Forward
In this week's episode, we tackle the very real issue of burn out, secondary trauma and work/life balance as clinicians, therapists, and healers. Listen as we share our personal experiences with burn out and how we found strategies to manage our mental health and remain in the field to continue what we have been called upon to do.
Key takeaways from this episode include:
1. It's okay to take a break from the work in order to heal and to keep going. Look into paid leave and sabbaticals as a way to reset, rest and rejuvenate to come back to the work.
2. Do not be shy or embarrassed to go to therapy for yourself. You must be well in order to help others.
3. Seek out a trusted mentor and or a veteran colleague to help provide career guidance. Pay it forward by mentoring a younger clinician/ healer/ therapist.
4. Take time to self-reflect and process what burn out feels and looks like for yourself. Pay attention to your use of negative rhetoric and behavior towards clients and co-workers.
5. Use mindfulness, breathing, positive self-talk, and other positive coping skills on a daily basis.
6. Continue to engage in passion projects and hobbies, whether paid or unpaid, that provide joy and excitement in your life.
7. Open yourself up to receiving feedback and support from colleagues and supervisors. People care about you and your well-being.
7. Healthy boundaries lead to longevity. Learn when/ how to say "no" and when/ how to say "yes".
8. Don't hesitate to use your vacation time! You have earned it!
