Today I speak to Melissa (melimel) on her journey through Domestic Violence and how she finally had enough. Like so many women in this situation at one point or another (just like me) Melissa felt stuck, she was young and had kids and just kept thinking if she stays, he will change. With him in and out of jail, she still had the faith he would one day change and be the husband and father he should be. No one sees the scars, the emptiness, the tears, they see the bruises but no one says anything. We need to change this and be a group of warriors fighting for these women and children! Melissa is just now after 8 years starting to tell her story, she was afraid of what people may think, but now, who cares, this is her story to tell. This is called Shame shifting, when a survivor of abuse is deemed the problem because heaven forbid it cant be the nice, sweet man! Melissa wanted to protect her kids and fought hard because he was their father. She fought and finally the moment happened, where she became strong and "had enough" after one violent episode of her being kicked and punched where she blacked out. We want to say, don't let it get to this moment. Have the strength, have the plan. This is not love, this is control. See the difference. Melissa is a strong beautiful woman who saved herself and her kids. Every woman who heals herself, heals all the women who came before her and all the women who come after her. Even if Melissas story reaches just one woman, it is worth it to tell. We could have gone so deep on all the emotions and feels and the "silent Scars" but that would be a whole episode of feeling sorry for ourselves and girl, we are not about that!
