The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe (Historical Fiction)
The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe
Dita is fourteen and living in Family Block 31 in Auschwitz in 1944. What made this block unusal is that families were kept together in the same area. Men and women were still separated, but they could see each other each day. Many in the block are unsure why the Nazis are allowing this, since it wasn't common at all. It turns out that of course there was a very sinister reason. But Dita doesn't know this when she volunteers to be the librarian for 8 contraband books that have been smuggled into the block. Everyone knows, including Dita, if these books are found, it could mean death for everyone.
Recommended for mature 8th graders due to content and subject matter.
