Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall receive mercy.
(Matthew 5:7)
Jesus seems to be telling us that we get what we give. This isn't exactly what He says throughout His teachings. He doesn't say we get what we give. He says we get much more than we give. And it works both ways. If we give evil, we get much more evil back to us in the fires of Hell. If we give good, we get much more good back to us in the glories of Heaven.
One of the greatest goods you can give is mercy. "Grace is when God gives us what we don't deserve. Mercy is when God doesn't give us what we do deserve."
Mercy ignores the problems in life. Not that they don't exist. They don't matter. You can't stand someone? God tells you to be merciful to them. Someone has hurt you? God tells you to be merciful to them. Someone has betrayed you? God tells you to be merciful to them.
After all, this is the Man who said, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do," as the nails were being hammered into His hands (Luke 23:34). He was merciful to you, asking God to forgive your sins that put Him on the cross. How can you not be merciful to others? Amen.
