Moment of Meditation: Double Honor (1 Timothy 5:17)
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well
are worthy of double honor,
especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.
(1 Timothy 5:17)
Did you honor your pastor this past Christmas? Your pastor takes the time to preach and teach God's Word to you and the rest of your congregation every week. If you are greatly enriched by either their teaching or preaching, they are deserving of honor. If you are greatly enriched by BOTH their teaching AND their preaching, they deserve double honor.
Preaching and teaching are the main jobs of pastors. These are the very visible means by which every pastor's worthiness is measured. How many times have you heard someone say, "You need to come hear our pastor"?
Do the pastors want that to be said about them? Yes and no. We want people to come hear us preach. But we don't want people to come because of us. We want people to come because of what we say. Not how we say it. Delivery can certainly help or hinder the message. But the message needs to be the focus. Those who direct the congregation well make the message the main thing and not themselves. A double honor needs to be bestowed upon them. Amen.
