Moment of Meditation: Honor Widows (1 Timothy 5:3-5)
Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.
The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God
and continues night and day to pray
and to ask God for help.
(1 Timothy 5:3-5)
Widows come in every age and every circumstance. They can be young, many of whom are widows because of the War on Terror. They can be old, having been married to their spouse for decades with tons of children and grandchildren. They can be of either age, having no family. The honor that is due each of them is different.
Those who are truly widowed. Who have no one and are all alone. Who have no family to take care of them. They require more assistance than those who have help. The Church must come to their aid where there is no family. We see this in Acts 6 when the office of deacon was instituted. The deacon's ministry was given so that the Apostles would not have to "give up preaching the Word of God to serve tables" (Acts 6:2).
The widow who is truly in need only has her God and her faith to turn to. And if the Church refuses to help, what good is it doing for her? The Church should be the first place they turn for help. Help to do the things that their husbands had once done. As little as cleaning out the gutters in the fall and spring. As big as fixing the car when it is needed. Everyone has something they can do to serve their neighbor who has no one else to turn to. Amen.
