Moment of Meditation: Secret of Our Religion (1 Timothy 3:16)
No one can deny how great is the secret of our religion.
(1 Timothy 3:16)
What is the secret of our religion? The Man Jesus Christ. As St. Paul describes through the rest of this verse, and we'll cover throughout this month, the humanity of Jesus is the secret of our religion. Many say that they have no problem with Jesus' humanity, but we are much more willing to accept His divinity. The idea that the Virgin Mary had to change the Son of God's diapers baffles us.
Jesus' earthy humanity gets under our skin because we can't believe that God would do things that way. But that's exactly what God needed to do to save us. He needed to get under our skin. He needed to take on our flesh so that He could redeem our flesh.
Most religions have no problem with having a god. Most religions have no problem with their primary minister being a human. The problem with Christianity is that our God and our primary minister are both God and man. As both God and man, He was solely able to deliver us from our sins through His death and resurrection.
This is the secret of our religion. But it's not a secret that God wants us to keep to ourselves. God wants this to be the worst-kept secret in the history of the world. He wants everyone to know about it and to believe it (1 Timothy 2:4). Spread the secret today of the God who became man. Amen.
