Moment of Meditation: Not Double-Tongued (1 Timothy 3:8)
Deacons likewise must be ... not double-tongued.
(1 Timothy 3:8)
Serpents are noted for their forked tongues. Two prongs that can give and take away at the same time. Exactly the way the serpent was in Eden. He gave a promise of being God-like and took exactly that away from Adam and Eve. God's image was lost in mankind at that moment.
God doesn't give with one hand and take away with the other. He is a giving God. This has been lost in us. We want to give but be able to take away with the very same action. Ever since Eden, we've had nothing good within our flesh (Romans 7:18). We live double lives with double tongues.
But in Baptism we have been renewed and given again that image, although it is incomplete in this life. We struggle against the doubleness inherent in our sinful nature. But we should always look towards the true double: the God-man Jesus Christ. He gives His body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins. He gave His life so that we might live forever with Him in Heaven. These are not double-tongued promises. These are straightforward statements of the Lord of Life. Amen.
