Moment of Meditation: Hospitable (1 Timothy 3:2)
An overseer must be ... hospitable.
(1 Timothy 3:2)
Hospitality seems to be a dying virtue. No longer are we likely to be invited to someone's home to get to know them. We're more likely to meet at a "neutral location" in order for everyone to be comfortable.
A pastor's hospitality is a great portion of his attitude, both actual and perceived. This is often put to the test when the phone rings at two in the morning. A member in distress. Does the pastor tell the member (or the member's family) to wait and call back in the morning? I hope not. He's not likely to be that person's pastor much longer. Or the pastor who gives the secretary strict orders that he's not to be bothered by anything short of death before lunch. How often will this pastor be called upon? He's more likely to be passed over for the next pastor in town who's more "open" and "friendly".
Let's bring back hospitality. Be willing to have company. Be available for people who may just need your help or a safe place to talk. Your relationships will be much better for it. After all, Jesus opened everything He had for you. What's your front door in comparison? Amen.
