Moment of Meditation: Temperate (1 Timothy 3:2)
Now an overseer must be ... temperate.
(1 Timothy 3:2)
What does "temperate" mean? Why is "temperance" such a good thing? Temperance is the practice of moderation. As Paul in Philippians 4:5, "Let your moderation be known to all men" (KJV). All things are lawful for God's children (1 Corinthians 10:23), but everything needs to be in moderation and in its appropriate circumstances. All things are gifts from God to be used properly.
But proper usage indicates that there is also the chance to misuse. A temperate attitude, which pastors are required to have, does not get angry easily. How many voters assemblies have you been to that have erupted into a heated argument or discussion? How many were calmed by a few words from the pastor? A few sage, temperate words from God's representative? Temperance leads through the commotion much like God leading the children of Israel through the waters of the Red Sea in the Exodus. Temperance leads to calmness. Amen.
