Moment of Meditation: Monogamy (1 Timothy 3:2)
Now the overseer must be ... the husband of one wife.
(1 Timothy 3:2)
Having talked last month about women's ordination, I want to take this moment to bring another great point in the relationship of the genders. Pastors should be married, but Paul makes the great statement that it must be a monogamous marriage. One husband, one wife. As the Gospel spread throughout the world, this became an important issue. Many societies throughout history have embraced the idea of polygamy. When the Gospel came to them, they were charged to put away their extra wives and husbands for the sake of the Gospel. Many did this willingly because they saw what marriage is: a picture of Christ and His Bride, the Church.
As examples, Pastors are to also show how to reverently live as a happily married person. An example of respect for their spouse and children. God's monogamy gives us the salvation of our souls through the forgiveness of our sins. Be thankful for God's one Bride. The Bride of which the baptized have become part. Amen.
