Moment of Meditation: Teacher in Faith and Truth (1 Timothy 2:7)
For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle--
I am telling the truth; I am not lying--
a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
(1 Timothy 2:7)
One of the great tasks of preachers is to teach. St. Paul spent so much time in many of the cities where he established churches because he needed to do more than preach. He needed to teach the people. He didn't have a book with a bunch of pre-written sermons they could read off when they came together. He needed to appoint leaders in the congregation. And those leaders needed to be taught to be able to preach for themselves.
That's the great challenge today: getting people to come hear the teaching. Sure, they'll come and hear the sermon, but they're too busy to stay for the Bible class following. It's not that important to them. Some take the faith very seriously and devote the time to make sure they are well-fed both by proclamation and by study.
This year, I've challenged Trinity's members to read the entire Bible. To take a few minutes from their day to be with their Lord in meditation and prayer. To learn from the feet of their Master. I invite you to take up the same challenge. Even though it's March, it's never too late to start. Amen.
