Moment of Meditation: Spirit of Counsel (John 14:26)
Original Broadcast: December 2010
Monthly Theme: God's Spirit
[Jesus said:] "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in My name,
will teach you all things
and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
(John 14:26)
Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Counselor. A counselor with whom we can talk and discuss the problems in our lives. Just as a human counselor may help us to see how things in our past have affected us both positively and negatively, the Holy Spirit counsels us with the reassuring, firm Word of God. He reminds us of Jesus' promises of forgiveness and life everlasting through His life and death. Jesus' promise of peace in the words that follow our text: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).
The Holy Spirit as Counselor teaches God's Word. He instructs us in the true picture of the world and our place in it. He counsels us not to lose heart but to trust in His promises for our lives. Amen.
