Moment of Meditation: Idolatry (Colossians 3:5)
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
(Colossians 3:5)
St. Paul sets before us the fruit of our sinful nature. All of it is summarized as idolatry. As the First Commandment serves as the platform where the other nine are built from, the Ninth and Tenth Commandments form a summary of the other eight to remind us that sin begins in the heart. Sin doesn't begin with an external action or word. It begins with an internal thought and desire.
Every sin we commit is a sin of desire. Sins manifest themselves differently, but they all come from internal desires. So every sin is idolatry, not only of action, but of thought. We sin because we think we can be God. We sin when we try to be God. We sin because we are not God.
But God forgives our sins through His Son Jesus Christ. The man who had no evil desires. Who had no idolatry because He was God in the flesh. God who forgives you today. Amen.
