When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye,
and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.
She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
(Genesis 3:6)
Coveting is a desire. Not a desire to have something LIKE someone else has. It's a desire to have our neighbor's particular thing.
Eve displays this as the serpent convinced her that eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil would make her wise like God. It would give her God's wisdom.
Knowledge is desirable. God wants us to desire knowledge. That's the crux of all the wisdom literature in the Bible. God wouldn't have given us books like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes if He didn't want us to seek after wisdom.
He wants us to seek wisdom at His feet. He doesn't want us to take it. He wants to give it. Desire not to take. Desire to receive. Amen.
