I am not saying this because I am in need,
for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.
(Philippians 4:11)
No matter what I'm content, Paul says. Whatever the circumstances. What circumstances could St. Paul possibly have had?
He writes to the Corinthians, "I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move" (2 Corinthians 11:23-25).
How many of these can you say are places where you can be content? in which of these circumstances can you find contentment? Without Christ, it's impossible. With Christ, all things are possible. St. Paul was in Christ. You are in Christ. You can be content no matter what. You are the only one standing in contentment's way. It's your attitude. Adopt Christ's attitude, as St. Paul did, and learn to be content always. Amen.
