Monthly Theme: Ninth Commandment
The Ninth Commandment
You shall not covet your neighbor's house.
What does this mean?
We should fear and love God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor's inheritance or house, or get it in a way which only appears right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it.
(SC I, 17-18)
The final two commandments prove to us that sin is not just an external action. The commandments on coveting show us that internal thoughts, plots and strategies are also under divine scrutiny for their sinfulness.
The final two commandments underlie our confession when we say to God, "I have sinned against you in thought, word and deed." They bring us the understanding Jesus gives in the Sermon on the Mount as He expands the Law from only external actions to thoughts about the actions as well.
But God does not want to condemn us because of our thoughts. He sent Jesus to remind us of these commandments as He also taught us about the salvation that He brings. Amen.
