Each of you should look not only to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others.
(Philippians 2:4)
While teaching a fourth grade religion class during seminary, I was introduced to a nice little acronym about the Christian life: GOY. God, Others, Yourself. The proper order of priorities. We look to God. Then we look to others. Then we look to ourselves.
How often we fail to do such a little thing! We want to look out for number one. That's the only way we feel that anything useful gets accomplished. After all, the old saying goes, "If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself."
How old is that saying? Even older than the earth. Literally. God would have to save humanity. He would have to die. No one else could do it. Despite the promises of the Law, we cannot fulfill them perfectly. He has to save us by becoming one of us and giving His life for all of humanity. He had to do it Himself, but He was always looking out for your benefit. Amen.
