Monthly Theme: Seventh Commandment
Achan replied, "It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel.
This is what I have done:
When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia,
two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels,
I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath."
(Joshua 7:20-21)
Achan's sin was twofold. He coveted and then he stole. He stole just a few things from the destruction of Jericho. It was stealing because God had commanded that everything in Jericho be destroyed and burned except Rahab and her family. It was such a little thing, but it caused great calamity.
Israel was defeated by Ai because of Achan's actions. A little action but BIG repercussions. It goes to show that there are no "little sins" in God's eyes. Every sin leads to condemnation in the pit of Hell (James 2:10). Israel suffered physically because of Achan's sin, but the suffering wasn't over. Although he was stoned to death as the temporal punishment, he had repented of his sin. Jesus died for his sin and your sins. Amen.
