Moment of Meditation: Put Asunder (Matthew 19:6)
Original Broadcast: June 2010
Monthly Theme: Sixth Commandment
[Jesus said:] "What God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."
(Matthew 19:6)
Jesus answers the question about no-fault divorce with these words. He was asked flat out, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" (v3). Jesus responds that it's not lawful to divorce. Divorce is not within God's plan. Divorce was only granted "because of the hardness of your heart" (v8).
Why is the human heart so hard? If you're married, you're married to a sinner. If you're dating, you're dating a sinner. We are surrounded by sinners throughout our lives. We're stuck with sinners everywhere we turn.
In the marriage rite, God joins two sinners together. God joins the marriage partners together. Who dares to break up something that God has put together? Both sinners involved in the marriage. We strive against our spouses from time to time. We strive against God for giving us this spouse from time to time. God wants marriages to stay together. Marriage is until death parts the couple. That's God's bottom line. Amen.
