Monthly Theme: Fifth Commandment
Then [Jesus] said to His disciples, "Therefore I tell you do, do not worry about your life,
what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. ...
Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?"
(Luke 12:22-25)
Many people worry about their lives. Some even worry to death about their lives. But Jesus reminds us of a few things in His comments to His disciples in Luke's 12th chapter. God is in control. We are not. We might not understand His reasons, but He has promised to see us through.
Unfortunately, some do not take this encouragement from our Lord. They decide to take their own life instead. The struggles and troubles of this world become too much for them. They despair that they aren't doing a good enough job with their life. They forget what God teaches us in His Word.
Suicide is considered by many to be one of the (if not the only) unforgivable sin. Suicide takes our focus away from God and turns it completely upon the self. Suicides see God as having let go of the wheel of their life and said He didn't care about them anymore.
Jesus says just the opposite. When the world seems out of control, it's not that God has lost control. The devil has simply made himself more visible in your life. And it's an honor to have him turn his attention towards you. Jesus told Simon Peter, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren" (Luke 22:31-32).
Jesus prophesied Peter's denials of Jesus and also His restoration on the beach after Jesus' resurrection. Peter needed not worry about His stumbles. He knew his Savior. He knew where he could find forgiveness of sins. You have the same source. Jesus Christ waits for you to cast your cares, worries and anxieties on Him. He will give your soul rest. Amen.
