Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
(Proverbs 31:8)
Who cannot speak up for themselves? Those who don't understand their plight. Their mental capability has been diminished either due to age and disease or to genetic defect. They don't understand and it's not their fault.
But there are those who believe that because they cannot understand their plight they don't deserve to take up valuable resources within the healthcare industry. They don't make a contribution to society so they're useless.
There is not a useless person in God's sight. If there were, Jesus would not have come to earth to save the world. John 3:16 would instead read, "For God so loved the useful that He gave His only Son so that whosoever useful believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
Thanks be to God that we have a Savior who came to the earth specifically for the useless. To redeem us and give us everlasting life despite the fact that we are completely useless and destitute in our own salvation. Christ came not to shun those who have been labeled "useless." He came to call the "useless" to Himself as He did with the tax collectors, prostitutes and sinners of Judea and Galilee. Amen.
