One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike.
Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.
(Romans 14:5)
Different holidays are special to different people. Right now, we're in the middle of the holy days of Lent. These forty days are special to some Christians. These forty days aren't any different from other days to other Christians. Is it a sin to celebrate Lent? No. Is it a sin to omit this celebration? No.
How can it not matter? St. Paul's words ring, "Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind." How and if we celebrate different holidays is part of our Christian freedom. We can celebrate them. We can not celebrate them. It's our choice, but it's a very serious choice.
St. Paul continues this discussion with a simple reminder: "None of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's" (vv7-8).
We are the Lord's possession. How we choose to celebrate being His possession is in our hands. But we must always keep in mind not to quarrel over our opinions nor to impose our opinions as necessary for everyone to believe. They are our opinions and "each of us will give an account of himself to God" (v12). Amen.
