Moment of Meditation: Sleeping in Church (Acts 20:9)
And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window,
sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer.
And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead.
(Acts 20:9)
We've all done it before. It was a long Saturday night. One of the kids was teething or throwing up or out well past curfew. We still got up in the morning and made it to church, but when the pastor begins the sermon we begin to drift off to sleep. The more we fight to stay awake, the harder it is to stay awake.
St. Paul had gotten a bit long-winded. That might be an understatement. His sermon went on past midnight. That's one long worship service. No wonder Eutychus fell asleep! It was becoming a VERY long day. Eutychus wanted to hear the Word. He wanted to hear Paul preach. "The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Mark 14:38).
Our flesh is definitely weak, but Jesus took on our weak flesh so that He might save us from our frailty. He told St. Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we are weak, we are strong because we are strengthened through God's Word in Jesus Christ. Amen.
