Moment of Meditation: You Saw No Form (Deuteronomy 4:15-16)
Original Broadcast: January 2010
Monthly Theme: First Commandment, Graven Images
Since you saw no form on the day that the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, beware let you act corruptly by making a carved image for yourselves.
(Deuteronomy 4:15-16)
Moses gives the all important understanding for the prohibition against worshipping graven images. On the top of Mount Sinai, what did the Israelites see? They saw smoke. They saw fire. They heard thunder. That's the image the Israelites were given as they were told, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt" (Exodus 20:2).
How do you worship the one true God? The way He tells you: "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24). How do you visualize the Spirit? You can't.
Worship is spiritual because faith is spiritual. You cannot visualize faith. Therefore you cannot visualize God, the object of our faith. May you continue to worship God in Spirit and truth as He desires. Amen.
