For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.
(1 Samuel 17:16)
For forty days the giant Goliath of Gath came out to challenge any Israelite in one-on-one combat. Don't worry about all the great tactical strategizing that would be required for a full-scale war. Let's just get this over with mano y mano.
No one answered. Goliath came out twice a day, every day, to badger the cowering Israelites. Still no one answered. Everyone knew that they wouldn't win physical combat with the giant. Great wealth, the king's daughter, many things promised to the man who would win. But no takers.
David came, quite by coincidence--God's coincidence, to the battlefield to check on his older brothers. Goliath came out. David burned with righteous anger at the blasphemies spoken by the Philistine.
David answered the challenge. The runt of the litter challenged the giant bully. The runt of the litter won the battle because he believed in God's deliverance of His people.
The runt of the litter delivered his people from the boastful giant. Another runt of the litter, who was also the Son of God, delivered His people from the boastful devil. Through this Son of God, you have the power to overcome the giants that boast before you because He has taken away their power with His death and resurrection. Believe in Him and you can overcome your giants. Amen.
