And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you
will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
(Philippians 1:6)
"Always finish what you start." That's a bit of wisdom we've probably all received while growing up. There's no point in leaving a job half-finished. So it is with the Holy Spirit. He doesn't just start everything by calling, enlightening and sanctifying us and letting us go about our own business as if He didn't have a care. He's right beside believers as they encounter and interact with the world around them.
St. Paul gives us many examples of this through his epistles to the various congregations throughout the Roman world in the first century. The Holy Spirit was very evident through His work in the lives of the believers. It was in the flashy miracles of the Apostles. More importantly, it was in the everyday life of the believer as they faced persecution for their beliefs.
For many of them, the day of Jesus Christ came quite quickly as they were put to death for being Christian in an anti-Christian world. But they went to their deaths unwavering in their faith because the Holy Spirit was there with them, keeping them strong in the faith that He had begun in them. The same faith He has begun in you as well. Amen.
