For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him?
So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

Third Person

The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit is the most mysterious member of the Trinity. He doesn't garner much attention for what He does. But His work is everywhere. By way of analogy, I generally explain the Holy Spirit's work as that of a spotlight operator.

The Holy Spirit's job is the revelation of the Gospel to the saints. Everything He does reveals something about the Gospel. At Jesus' Baptism, John the Baptizer explained that the Holy Spirit's descent as a dove was God's sign to him as to who the Messiah was. The Holy Spirit reveals to us everything we need to know about Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. He does this because He indwells in all Christians and is the Third Person of the Trinity. He knows both sides of the human-divine equation.

So also, Martin Luther begins his explanation of the Third Article of the Creed in His Small Catechism: "I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him." Everything we need to know we got from the Holy Spirit. This month we'll look more at what He does in our lives. Amen.
