Moment of Meditation: Maker of Heaven and Earth (Hebrews 11:3)
Original Broadcast: November 2008
Monthly Theme: First Article
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command,
so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
(Hebrews 11:3)
We end the First Article of the Apostles' Creed with the words, "maker of heaven and earth." But what is meant by this statement? It's completed in the Nicene Creed by the line that follows: "all things visible and invisible."
Often, we consider simply what we see with our eyes as the extent of what God created in the first six days. But St. Paul reminds the Colossians, "By [Christ] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible" (1:16). There are many things we cannot see with our naked eyes: the wind, the expansiveness of the universe, and subatomic particles are just a few.
Without many of these things, our world would not function. Granted, in southwest Minnesota, we prefer days where the wind isn't gusting over 50 mph. But then we'd have to rake our leaves instead of leaving them to be blown into our neighbor's yard. Even the invisible things created by God are marvelous. Tune in next time to hear about more of the invisible creation. Amen.
