Moment of Meditation: No Escape (Proverbs 19:5)
A false witness will not go unpunished,
and he who breathes out lies will not escape.
(Proverbs 19:5)
Michael Peterson sang, "Don't lie and then you can look the whole world in the eye" ("Drink, Swear, Steal & Lie"). That's the problem with liars. They have to keep track of what lie they've told to whom. Just one slip by saying the wrong thing to the wrong person destroys everything. You've been exposed as a liar and no one will trust you again. There's no escape from being seen with suspicion after that.
God encourages us to use our words to defend and speak well of our neighbors. Look at Jesus' example of this. Even when He was hanging on the Cross, being executed for a crime He didn't commit, being hackled by the chief priests and elders, He says, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34). Even after all the murderous lies told about Jesus, He still defends and speaks well of even His enemies as He asks His Father to show mercy to them. There's something that we shouldn't want to escape from. Amen.
