Moment of Meditation: Elohim/God (Genesis 1:1)
Original Broadcast: July 2008
Monthly Theme: Names of God
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
(Genesis 1:1)
Elohim is the basic name for God in the Hebrew language. This month we'll meditate on the various names that God gives Himself in the Old Testament. Each name expresses a different aspect of God's character. This morning we start with the most basic and earliest.
In good grammatical Hebrew, Elohim is plural and denotes gods in general. Even the idols of the nations were called Elohim. But God takes this name upon Himself in the beginning for two reasons. First, to proclaim Himself as the true God of the universe--its Creator and Preserver. Second, it helps to proclaim the plurality of persons in the Godhead. The plural nature points towards (but doesn't absolutely prove) the Trinity--Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The basic notion of God is expressed in Elohim as primarily the creative aspect of God. You should spend some time today thanking God for His Creation--and especially His creation of you. Amen.
