Moment of Meditation: He Reigns (1 Corinthians 15:25)
For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.
(1 Corinthians 15:25)
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!!
St. Paul continues His expounding of the Christian faith in the resurrection with the basis for what is the only line in the Second Article of the Apostles' Creed where the verb is in the present tense: "and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty." Jesus is doing what now? He's sitting at the right hand of God, reigning. And He will do that until He has defeated all His enemies.
St. Paul obviously has in mind the psalm generally prescribed for Ascension: "The Lord says to my Lord, 'Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool'" (110:1). When will Jesus stop reigning? When all His enemies are conquered and made a footstool for Him. These enemies--Satan, death and our sinful flesh--must be conquered before Jesus will relinquish His reign.
How does that happen? Through God's will being done as His Word is faithfully preached and the Sacraments are rightly administered for the salvation of sinners. When that is accomplished, Jesus will return.
"What can I do?" you might be asking. The only thing you can do is simple: support the work of the Church that is doing God's will so that God can conquer the forces of the evil one so that He may rescue us and bring us to be with Him in Heaven. That's what you can do--support the preaching of the Word and the administration of the Sacraments--because that is what Christianity is based upon. Amen.
