Moment of Meditation: Everlasting Father (Isaiah 9:6)
"For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
(Isaiah 9:6)
We can find it hard to see Jesus as being referred to as "Everlasting Father". We've become quite accustomed to Jesus being called the Son of God. He IS the Son of God. Yet Isaiah can also call Him the "Everlasting Father".
Why? Because of what a Father is. A Father is the benefactor of the family. He is the protector and provider. Jesus provides salvation for the family of those who have been baptized into His death.
He is "Everlasting" because what He dispenses to His family is as everlasting as He is. A more literal way of translating this would be "benevolent with treasure". That treasure is the everlasting life we have as the children of God. This is the greatest treasure that can be given to anyone and you have it through your Baptism. As we come to the celebration of the beginning of our Savior's life, remember that He was born to deliver this treasure to you. Amen.
