"For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
(Isaiah 9:6)
Isaiah continues his line of titles and names for Jesus with "Mighty God". Is this necessarily that Jesus is God? No, not necessarily. This is the generic word for "God" in the Old Testament used here. It had various meanings from the one True God to any of the false gods and idols worshipped by the pagans to mighty heroes of war.
However, is this a place to quibble about which word for God is used? No. This is talking about the ruler who is to be born that will be above every ruler that has been before Him. We know in our hearts that the ultimate ruler of the universe is God Himself. From Him every other government gets its authority (Romans 13:1). This prophesied ruler will be like God in His ruling. He will be "Mighty" like God. He will fight for His people to bring them the peace He desires to give them.
This fight Jesus had as He allowed the nails to be placed into His hands and be lifted up on the Cross. He fought what seemed like most to be a losing battle. Everyone--including Satan--thought that Satan had defeated the Son of God, but Good Friday was not the end of the battle but the beginning. The end came on the third day as Jesus rose from the dead, breaking the bonds of death that could have no mastery over Him. Jesus is the conquering hero who forty days after His resurrection ascended into Heaven to be received as a divine hero who liberated you and me from the bondage of sin. Let us always remember our Mighty Jesus even as we see Him lying as a babe in the manger. Amen.
