"Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth."
(Matthew 5:5)
Who are the meek? And what is meekness? It's a display of patience in the reception of injury. The meek don't surrender their rights as human beings, they trust that God will avenge the wrongs done to them as He has promised (Romans 12:19).
Meekness shows itself most clearly as Jesus stands before Annas on Good Friday morning. A guard struck Him, saying, "Is that the way you answer the high priest?" Jesus replied, "If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why did you strike Me?" (John 18:22-23). He didn't give up His rights. In fact, He demanded that His rights be upheld, but it wasn't in malice but in a pursuit of justice where He knew that He'd find no justice.
When the Bible speaks of inheritance, it signifies the great inheritance that every Christian receives in Baptism and through faithful, meek service will see first-hand on the Last Day. Amen.
