Moment of Meditation: Poor in Spirit (Matthew 5:3)

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven."

"Poor in Spirit"

The poor in spirit are those who understand that they are beggars before a righteous God. We are spiritually destitute because we know that we haven't been as faithful to God as we ought. We walk around many times only as spiritual zombies, seeking in vain to find ourselves "good enough".

But what does Jesus say about those who are poor in spirit--those who understand they are spiritually bankrupt? They have the kingdom of Heaven. The holy Christian and apostolic Church on earth is populated by people who know that they are beggars before God. Beggars who must accept His mercy for everything we have--including, but not limited to, our salvation through the death of His Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
